Background
On September 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike slammed into Galveston, TX and was the third largest hurricane to ever make landfall in the
U.S. Ike took 112 lives and still today, 34 people are unaccounted for from the Galveston and Bolivar Peninsula areas. Most of the
homes on Bolivar Peninsula were entirely destroyed. Approximately 160 homes once stood on Crystal Beach, the area hardest hit.
After Ike, three remain.
Nine months after Hurricane Ike, where 3,600 homes once stood, piles of debris litter every inch of the
Peninsula. Flood and wind damage settlements are not paying enough to rebuild. Sadly, a blanket insurance determination has been
made that is paying out only 11.2% of the value of each home. Only twenty-five percent of Bolivar Peninsula residents have returned,
and this number is not expected to increase. Moreover, FEMA has terminated its funding of clean-up contractors.
"IKE: A Documentary" is a story about a torn city rebuilt by everyday heroes as told by a group of
students from Ball High School in Galveston, Texas, in an effort to help their battered community rise above
the horrors of a devastating natural disaster. |
