Mir Pace's relief action is largely directed toward those areas beyond the media spotlight. We concentrate on events deemed less newsworthy in order to allay populations, incapable of recovery without external assistance, from becoming the "aftermath."

Mir Pace conducts IHSM programs during the summer months and throughout the academic year. The nature of humanitarian relief work is dynamic and the work in all areas is constantly changing, developing, expanding, and improving. It is thus difficult to say exactly what work students will do abroad. Currently, our IHSM programs include:

  • Bolivar Peninsula, TX: Construction, interior repair and improvement projects, and community clean-up projects for the people of Bolivar whose lives have been devastated and property destroyed by Hurricane Ike.  [more]

  • Guatemala: Nutrition intervention programs to alleviate problems of food insecurity and hunger and to improve the nutritional health of the local Mayan population; construction of sanitation systems, teaching of basic healthcare techniques in order to safeguard against the spread of disease; as well as helping to establish small business initiatives to assist the local community in building strong local organizations that can promote self-sufficiency.   [more]

  • Tanzania: Construction of water harvesting and sanitation systems, interior repair and improvement projects at a rural hospital, distributing food resources, such as cassava, sweet potatoes, maize and bean seeds to those affected by two years of drought, as well as distributing other desperately needed tangibles to the people of the northwest Kagera district of Tanzania. Mir Pace Volunteers will also visit and assist at a shelter for street children, and have a unique and extraordinary intercultural exchange working along side people from various indigenous tribes.  [more]
