Under a blanket of thick clouds and heavy fog, with the constant threat of rain and thunder,
more than 60 brave souls came out to participate in Mir Pace's 2nd Annual Paddle for Poverty. Because of
poor visibility, the long race was cancelled. However, under the direction of Kurt Bornheim (Hull Harbormaster),
we were able to mark out a course, agreeable to all participants. Keeping within Hull's inner bay, the
race went off without a hitch. Jim Dolloff of Marshfield, took the lead from the start and finished in
first place with an impressive time of 11:30. Jim was followed by Michael Gaffney (11:35) and Chris Buchino
and Derrick Muise (tandem) took third place (12:47). Chris and Derrick placed third overall and took first
place in the tandum category. Second place tandum went to Craig and Caroline Comins (14:05), followed by
Sam Fortin and Lexa Keenan (15:12).
At the conclusion of the races, trophies were awarded and many stayed around to talk with some of our young IHSM
volunteers and learn more about Mir Pace International. A raffle was also held and prizes included
a 3-month membership to The Sports Club/LA in Boston, a weekend camping package provided
by REI, an MLB baseball hand signed by Bronson Arroyo, a day of pampering at AZ Studio, and gift
certificates to Saparito's Florence Club Café, Square Café, and Atlantica.
Throughout the day, our friends from Java Jungle and Panara Bread provided refreshments, and
Mir Pace's own beautiful hand-made "Peace" bracelets were available for purchase, as were items made by a weaver's
collaborative in Tamahú, Guatemala.
Our sincere thanks again to all of our sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who came out to
participate in the Paddle for Poverty. Your support will enable us to bring urgent food aid to so many families
in Tanzania, Africa at the end of the month! We look forward to seeing you again next year!
